Bubble In Amethyst

Friday, February 17, 2006

This is a bit of amethyst which has things trapped in it. The most obvious being a bubble of gas which was trapped when the crystal formed. Around the bubble there is some liquid which must have been trapped at the same time. The brown bits are tiny bits of rock which the crystal grew around. For an idea of scale, the bubble is about 1mm across and about 5mm below the surface of the amethyst.

Cool pic, nice to have an explanation with it too, for those of us not into rocks and stuff.
