Twelfth Night, The Mother-In-Law & Those Damn Pixies

Friday, January 06, 2006

Well, it's twelfth night and my mother-in-law is coming to look after the kids over the weekend while I take wifey up to London to Moorfields eye hospital. Have to make sure that the house is all spick'n'span (WTF does that actually mean???) and that all the decorations are put away. Not that I'm superstitious or anything, but I can really do without pixies running riot around the house for the next twelve months :)

Always here to help:

Spick-and-span or spic-and-span - "adj. 1665, shortened form of 'spick-and-span-new' new as a recently made spike and chip of wood (1579-80, from spick SPIKE nail = span-new, very new, borrowed from Old Icelandic span-nyr, from span chip + nyr new)." "Barnhart Concise Dictionary of Etymology" by Robert K. Barnhart (HarperCollins Publishers, New York, 1995

It's also the brand name of a cleaning product.

Now you know:-)

You been trying for "burst of color" shots or something lately?

Some great work with colors. This one may be the weakest of the last three, I think you should stick with red/yellow/green :)

Greetings, hope all is well with your wife this weekend. However, for those of us on this side of the pond, just what exactly is this pixie / decoration thingy?

Hi Mike, superstitious people would have us believe that if every last bit of Xmas decoration isn't taken down by midnight on the twelfth night, that mischievous pixies would be able to enter your house at night and create havoc. In other words it would be 'bad luck'...
